  7.     Indiana Jones has been a big success at the box office. LucasArts
  8.     has brought Indy to the computer screen. This is the second Indiana
  9.     adventure released by LucasArts.
  10.  
  11.     I reviewed the CD-ROM version. While I had played the disk-based
  12.     version, and was impressed, the CD-ROM release is no comparison. The
  13.     CD-ROM is a full-voice talking version. There is music throughout,
  14.     and all the dialogue is spoken. There are approximately 40
  15.     characters and over 8000 lines spoken. Doug Lee, is the voice in
  16.     Indiana Jones.

  18.     Fate of Atlantis is the largest and most complex game ever published
  19.     by LucasArts. It features over 200 rooms, and Indy artists rendered
  20.     more than 100 pieces of original background art.  The results are a
  21.     stunning 256-color VGA graphic adventure, which also features Lucas
  22.     Arts' proprietary iMUSE interactive music and sound effects system.

  24.     Indiana Jones takes place in the 1930s, a time when Germany and the
  25.     United States were racing to develop the first atomic bomb. In the
  26.     context of Fate of Atlantis, the Nazis believe discovering Atlantis'
  27.     mysterious power source will lead them to victory in the race and
  28.     domination over the world.

  30.     The game opens on Indy being visited by a German stranger. The
  31.     stranger steals an ancient statue that releases a tiny, glowing bead
  32.     _ orichalcum. He escapes, leaving behind his overcoat, where Indy
  33.     finds a Nazi ID and a magazine article on Sophia Hapgood, a former
  34.     archaeologist and a current self-proclaimed authority on the lore of
  35.     Atlantis. Sophia and Indy have "a past," and linked by the ancient
  36.     statue and a lost city, they have a future.

  38.     You will never tire of playing this game. One of the main reasons is
  39.     that it is basically three games in one. At the outset, you first
  40.     have to locate Sophia. You then travel with here through several
  41.     adventures. After the initial phases are completed you have a
  42.     decision to make. The game is designed with three playing paths. The
  43.     choice you make determines the perils you will encounter. Choose a
  44.     puzzle-oriented "Wits" path, an action oriented "Fists" path or a
  45.     dialogue oriented "Trust" path. You do have the option in some to
  46.     travel alone. Further enhancing replayability are complex puzzles
  47.     with alternative solutions. Additionally, Fate of Atlantis has
  48.     multiple interfaces, including controlling a German submarine,
  49.     steering a hot air balloon and operating a mysterious Atlantean
  50.     machine. The response, or questions, that you ask will also alter
  51.     that scenario.

  53.     The "Talkie" version (CD-ROM) of Atlantis requires: 12MHz 286 or
  54.     faster, MSCDEX CD-ROM driver, 595K free memory or 2 megs with an EMS
  55.     driver, VGA, Soundblaster or compatible (for speech), and keyboard,
  56.     joystick or mouse.

  58.     The disk-based version does not require the CD-ROM drive. The sound
  59.     card is also optional, as the disk-based version does not have
  60.     talking, and sounds can be generated by the PC speaker, although a
  61.     sound card is suggested.

  63.     If this is the future of games, I would definitely purchase a CD-ROM
  64.     drive. I have reviewed other products in the disk-based and CD-ROM
  65.     fields. While both versions are basically the same graphically, the
  66.     CD-ROM version surpasses anything that can be placed on disk. This
  67.     is one game that any gamer would be pleased to find under the
  68.     Christmas tree. The CD-ROM version also includes free, the $12.95
  69.     hint book, to help get you out of those tight spaces.
